Water safety is important for all children and adults, particularly those with special needs. At Swimtastic we want to make sure that every child has the opportunity to learn to swim in a safe and comfortable environment. Our team of certified teachers have various training and experience in working with students with special needs (including autism, sensory struggles, ADHD, physical disabilities and other challenges). There are so many therapeutic and physical benefits to swimming for children with special needs including muscle strength, endurance, relief from physical discomfort and even improvement in overall communication skills to name a few. Our goal is to make every child water safe and to allow them to experience the joy of swimming, for a lifetime!
All children should learn the basics of water safety, and how to swim if they are able. Drowning is the #1 cause of accidental death in children with autism and is the leading cause of death among children in the U.S. under age 5. Drowning is of even greater concern for children with autism as the National Autism Association reports the risk of death by drowning to be twice as high for children with ASD than in the general population. Children with special needs can greatly benefit from swimming lessons. Not only will it help teach them life saving water safety skills there are also a number of other benefits including emotional, developmental, and physical.
Our team is trained and prepared to teach children with a variety of special needs in a calm, safe and gentle environment. This includes:
We know that for some children with special needs new environments and people can be scary. We want to make sure that learning to swim is a comfortable, positive experience.
Prior to your child’s first swim lesson we encourage you and your family to come in, meet the team and discuss your child’s specific needs and goals to help us develop a customized teaching plan.
For families with children with special needs, the comparatively high risk of drowning makes learning to swim even more imperative. Consider talking to your child’s occupational therapist about making learning to swim one of your child’s targeted life skill goals. In addition to water safety measures such as locking pool gates, supervision, and being aware of your child’s ability, teaching your child to swim is the most effective way to reduce the risk of drowning. We can help your child achieve this life skill with our special needs swimming lessons.
One-on-one instruction is a wonderful option for kiddos with special needs. Weekly classes on an ongoing basis.
While we do not directly offer tuition support for swimming lessons for special needs children, we do partner with third-party organizations that may be able to help. We’d love to welcome your child to swim class, so please get in touch with our team to learn more.
We offer infant swim and toddler lessons as early as 6 months of age to help build confidence and get your child comfortable in the water. In our ParentTot classes, parent-child combos bond with their kiddos while teaching the foundation of vital water safety skills like breath control, floating and kicking in a warm water environment. Our Toddler Transition class is focused on teaching water safety skills while transitioning the swimmer to learn independently of mom and dad.

This is a perfect program to jump start your swimmers skills and fill your spring break and summer break with our favorite activity … swimming!
Ready for more? Our Swim Team Prep classes focus on improving endurance, strength and stroke technique for swimmers that want to refine their swimming skills. Classes include a set workout with an out of water coach whose primary goal is to mimic the experience one would have on a recreational swim team.
