At Swimtastic, water safety is the heart of everything we do. That’s why we’re proud to officially partner with the National Drowning Prevention Alliance (NDPA) to spread awareness about a crucial tool in drowning prevention: the 5 Layers of Protection.
Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1–4, and the truth is, it can happen to anyone. It’s fast, silent, and often occurs when we least expect it. But it’s also preventable—and learning just a few key steps could help save a life.
The NDPA’s 5 Layers of Protection work together to significantly reduce the risk of drowning. These layers aren’t meant to replace one another—they work best when used together.
Install four-sided fencing with self-latching gates, safety covers, and pool alarms to help prevent unsupervised access to water.
Always have a capable adult acting as a designated Water Watcher—stay alert, avoid distractions, and keep eyes on children at all times near water.
Enroll every child (and adult!) in swim lessons to build water confidence and essential skills like floating, treading water, and safe entry/exit from pools.
Use U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets, especially around open water or for weaker swimmers. Life jackets are a critical layer when unexpected water exposure occurs.
Be ready. Learn CPR with rescue breaths, basic water rescue techniques, and always have a phone nearby to call 911 in an emergency.
At Swimtastic, we believe that water safety education starts early and never stops. We’re honored to align our mission with the NDPA and help families across the country adopt the 5 Layers of Protection as part of their everyday routines.
